Doing business in the Middle East

Can a western woman do business in the Arab world and Iran?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions I receive about doing business in the Arab world and Iran.

Building connections

In my more than 20 years of experience in the Middle East, I have always seen being a woman as a significant advantage. As a woman, you have access to both men and women in the Arab world and Iran. Additionally I speak Arabic and Farsi and understand the culture. This has allowed me to open doors that often remain closed to men and build lifelong friendships.

Exploring Jordan

I have just returned from a stay in Jordan.  Modern Jordan is a fascinating mix of Western influences and Arab culture. In cities like Amman, you’ll find luxury shopping malls, chic cafes and a lively art scene. Women here often dress in a variety of styles, from conservative to Western fashion and English is widely spoken.

In Contrast traditional Urdun (Arabic for Jordan), particularly in down town Amman and rural areas, retains a more conservative outlook. You need to dress more conservatively, covering arms and knees, and it is helpful to know some Arabic to communicate with the locals.

The importance of language and culture

Speaking Arabic and knowing Arab culture are crucial for establishing sustainable relationships, both personally and professionally. I met a young woman, who had graduated in Islamic law, or Sharia.  We talked about how Sharia is important in Jordan’s legal system, and she explained Sharia principles in a simple way. While Jordanian law,  is primarily secular, Sharia plays an important role in personal status law, such as marriage, inheritance, and family matters.

Understanding Sharia

Understanding the basics of Sharia is important for anyone looking to engage with Jordanian society, as it influences many customs and traditions. In our next blog we’ll explore Sharia further and what it means for doing business in sharia-based countries like for example Saudi Arabia.
